Book reviews: June 14 to June 28

One day, the day after I came back to Brisbane from Sydney I decided that I want to read a lot of books and get away from university and technology for a bit.  Somehow, it has ended up to reading 5 novels and 2 biographies in 2 weeks.  A lot more than I read in the past couple of years at least.

So what brought about this change?  I needed a change from what I do ‘usually’.  I want to go ‘old school’.  I need a break really – break from events, break from uni textbooks, break from technology, break from reading feeds and status messages and emails.  I want to sit at a cafe for hours to soak up the fresh air and have a good book. And I encourage people to take a break if they feel that they are getting too much of something! First I started off raiding my housemate’s bookshelves as I have no novels of my owns and then started going out there and buying books. Read the rest of this entry »

Taking that step beyond just looking up event info on their site…

I decided to go to Sydney for nearly a week and the decision to go was on June 4 which was when this entry was posted.

My preconceptions of Sydneytown was that it was going to be dull and boring despite the fact that a lot of things are going on.  There may be a lot, but is it something that I am looking for?  Last time I went was on a weekend in ‘holiday’ mode, any time before that was most likely in 2004.  Opera house, check.  Circular Quay, check.  Mass of shopping crowds, check.  Public transport and traffic, check.

This time around, was different as I was in Sydney with a purpose and it mainly oriented around the event agenda that I have.

I attended events knowing no-one and came out refreshed, inspired, connected (with both speaker and audience).  Most of all, I came out with something that I can take back with me.  A nugget of knowledge from the specialised expertise of a certain speaker, an extra ‘need to look up’ on my post-event to do list via my iPhone Notes app, a business card, a scribbled piece of paper full of notes, a Twitter introduction, a postcard with someone’s address, even a photo and an interview from a photographer at Creative Sydney. So here it is, some things to give to you (my dear readers) to make the most out of professional development events. Read the rest of this entry »

June 10-12 | Creative Sydney Agenda

First heard about them when someone tweeted to me a link to their Top 100 Catalysts and an email from one of them about the festival.  So I’ll be attending all programs in these three days: Read the rest of this entry »

Pecha Kucha Volume 11 – Personal Recollections

Had another great night! Last Pecha Kucha was at SLQ which has enabled the event to reach new audiences but I really like their original home which is the Turbine Hall in the Brisbane Powerhouse.  Here are my personal recollections of some of the speakers: Read the rest of this entry »
